THE DIFFUSION WAVE MODEL

In October 2013, I was invited to lecture at the EDIFICA 2013 Congress, organized annually by the students of civil engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), in Monterrey, Mexico.1 The three-day conference featured eight speakers from diverse civil engineering backgrounds, to include most fields.

On the second day of the conference, the speakers got together for lunch at a local restaurant. I sat next to a gentlemen from Canada who worked for a well-known global hydraulics software company. I inquired with him as to the status of their watershed model (see figure below). He answered: "We are getting into the diffusion wave model." Unbeknownst to him, I was the first one to propose the diffusion wave model for catchment dynamics in a paper published in 1986. 2
