CIV E 530 - OPEN-CHANNEL HYDRAULICS
SPRING 2008
HOMEWORK No. 13
- Design a circular concrete culvert with the following data: Q = 220 cfs;
inlet invert elevation = 100 ft; stream bed slope = 0.02;
culvert length = 200 ft; tailwater depth above outlet invert = 4 ft; and roadway shoulder elevation = 112 ft.
Assume f = 0.015, Manning's n = 0.013, entrance type is square edge with headwalls, and upstream freeboard = 2 ft.
- Use ONLINE COLBY to calculate the discharge of sands by the
Colby 1964 method given the following flow data: mean velocity = 4 fps, mean flow depth = 6 ft, channel width = 120 ft,
water temperature = 70oF, bed material size = 0.5 mm, and wash load concentration = 300 ppm.
- Use ONLINE SEDIMENT 51 to calculate the design life of a reservoir, given the following data:
reservoir capacity 50 million cubic meters, catchment area 800 km2, mean annual runoff at the site 200 mm.
Assume medium grained sediment deposits with specific weight of 1400 kg/m3.
Determine how long will it take for the reservoir to lose 20%, 80% and 100% of its storage volume.
