CIV E 530 - OPEN-CHANNEL HYDRAULICS
FALL 2011
HOMEWORK No. 2

  1. Give the following canal data:   b = 1.6 m, z = 1, n = 0.013, and So = 0.0006. Calculate a table of discharges and Froude numbers between flow depths of 1.5 and 2.0 m, at intervals of 0.1 m. Use ONLINE CHANNEL 15.

  2. The All-American Canal in Imperial County, California, is designed for a discharge of 15,155 cfs at the outlet of Imperial Dam, on the Colorado river. The bottom width is 175 ft, and the side slopes are 2 H : 1 V. The length is 82 miles, and the drop is 173.184 ft. The Manning's n is 0.028. Calculate the normal depth, velocity, and Froude number for these conditions. Use ONLINE CHANNEL 01.

  3. What is the design discharge of the Chasma-Jhelum (C-J) Link canal, in Pakistan, of trapezoidal cross section, bottom width b= 380 ft, flow depth y = 14 ft, side slope z = 3 (3 H : 1 V), Manning's n = 0.0216, and bottom slope S = 0.0001? What is the mean flow velocity and Froude number? Use ONLINE CHANNEL 15.

  4. The maximum velocity in a certain channel is 25% greater than the mean velocity. Estimate the α and β coefficients with three-digit accuracy.
