  1. The discharge per unit width under a sluice gate, assuming the conservation of specific energy, is:

    q = y1 y3 [ 2 g / (y1 + y3) ] 1/2

    Derive this formula.

  2. Prove that this equation is mathematically the same as that used in ONLINE CHANNEL 13.

  3. Using ONLINE CHANNEL 13, calculate the discharge through the sluice gate when the upstream flow depth is 1.2 m and the gate opening is 0.15 m.

  4. Develop a rating for this sluice gate for gate openings between 0.05 m and 0.50 m, at intervals of 5 cm, when the upstream flow depth is 1.2 m.
