CIV E 444 - APPLIED HYDRAULICS
FALL 2009
HOMEWORK No. 4
- The Big Thompson flood of July 30, 1976, near Loveland, Colorado,
took the lives of 130 people. The flood was sudden, and the unit-width discharge was probably
at a maximum.
Assuming a peak q = 50 m2/s (an extremely high value), use critical flow to determine the probable
flow depth and flow velocity at the peak of the flood.
- The 8000-ft long emergency weir at Guyana's Boerasirie Conservancy has the crest elevation at 18.684 m (msl) and the design
pool elevation at 18.899 m (msl). The adopted discharge coefficient at the design head is C = 1.45.
What discharge (m3/s) will be passed at the design head?
- The Cabana irrigation canal has a trapezoidal cross section, with Q = 10 m3/s, b = 1.5 m, z = 1, S = 0.0006, and n = 0.013.
Calculate the critical and normal depths and velocities. Use onlinechannel05.
- A hydraulic jump forms in a rectangular channel below a spillway.
The discharge is 5 m3/s, and the channel width is 4 m.
The upstream velocity is 6.25 m/s. Calculate the sequent depths y1 and y2,and
the energy loss ΔE through the jump . Do the calculations by hand.
Verify your calculations with onlinechannel11 (for y2), onlinechannel12 (for ΔE), and onlinechannel16 (for y1).
