CIV E 445 - APPLIED HYDROLOGY
SPRING 2014
HOMEWORK No. 1

  1. During a given year, the following hydrologic data were collected for a 2500-km2 basin: (a) Precipitation: 900 mm; (b) total combined loss due to evaporation and evapotranspiration: 550 mm; (c) groundwater outflow: 50 mm; and (d) surface runoff (excluding baseflow): 250 mm. What is the change in volume of water (in hm3, i.e., millions of cubic meters) remaining in storage in the basin during the elapsed year?

  2. During a given year, the following hydrologic data were measured for a certain 60-mi2 watershed: (a) precipitation: 15 in; and (b) losses due to evaporation, evapotranspiration, and infiltration: 13 in. Calculate the mean annual runoff in cfs. Neglect changes in surface water storage.
