HOMEWORK No. 3

  1. The downstream slope in an ogee overflow spillway is 100% (1 H : 1 V). The spillway is made out of concrete, with a Darcy-Weisbach friction factor f = 0.016. What is the Froude number to be expected at the toe of the spillway at the design discharge?

  2. What is the design discharge of the Chasma-Jhelum Link canal, of trapezoidal cross section, bottom width b= 380 ft, flow depth y = 14 ft, side slope z = 3 (3 H : 1 V), Manning's n = 0.022, and bottom slope S = 0.0001? What is the mean flow velocity and Froude number? [ Hint: Use ONLINE CHANNEL 15 ].

  3. At what percentage of flow depth is discharge a maximum in a circular culvert? [ Hint: Try several depths y for a chosen input set, say D = 3 ft, S = 0.01, and n = 0.013, in ONLINE CHANNEL 03 ].

  4. A design change is required in the Chasma-Jhelum Link Canal. What should be the design flow depth if the revised discharge is not to exceed 18,000 cfs?
