HOMEWORK No. 1: RIVER MECHANICS
- Given particle diameter d = 0.15 mm, and
water temperature T = 20oC, calculate the fall velocity of a spherical sediment particle using
ONLINE_FALL_VELOCITY.
- Determine whether a 3-mm diameter quartz particle is at rest or moving under the action of a 8-ft
flow depth with channel slope So = 0.0001. Assume water temperature T = 70oF.
Use ONLINE_SHIELDS.
What flow depth (to an accuracy of 0.01 feet) will stop movement?
- What is the minimum Froude number and minimum permissible velocity required
to move a particle of diameter ds = 0.6 mm
with a flow depth d = 1.2 m
and dimensionless Chezy friction factor f = 0.004?
Assume water temperature T = 20oC. Use ONLINE_SHIELDS_VELOCITY.
- Estimate the particle size (in 0.1 mm) that will initiate movement for the
Canal do Trabalhador. Assume y = d = 2.5 m, and T = 23°C.
