HOMEWORK No. 6:  RESERVOIR SEDIMENTATION

It is required to calculate the number of years that it will take a certain reservoir to fill up with sediment up to 80% of its total volume.

For this purpose, the following data is available:

  • Reservoir capacity V = 10 hm3 (million cubic meters)

  • Catchment area A = 366 km2

  • Mean annual runoff Q = 290 mm

  • Sediment yield S = 380 M.Tons/km2

  • Specific weight of sediments W = 12,000 N/m3

A. Use ONLINE_RESERVOIR_LIFE to calculate the reservoir life for the given data. Use default number of discrete intervals (n = 10). Run all three cases of sediment size: (a) fine grained; (b) medium grained; and (c) coarse grained. To what do you attribute the difference in results between the three types of sediment?

B. For case (a) only, run ONLINE_DENDY_BOLTON to calculate sediment yield S in lieu of the given value, and proceed to recalculate ONLINE_RESERVOIR_LIFE with the new S value obtained. What is your conclusion?
