Vauban (1633-1707) was the first military engineer to get involved with works with peaceful purpose.

During Vauban's time, the term "engineer" was first used in France as a professional title for a scientifically trained technician in the public service.

The "Ecole des Ponts e Chaussees," founded in 1747 in France, was the first civil engineering school.
