The Swiss Robert Maillart (1872-1940) has been quoted as saying:
"It is admittedly a fairly widespread opinion that the dimensions [of a structure]
should be unequivocally and finally determined by calculation. However, in view of the impossibility of taking into
account all possible contingencies, any calculation is nothing but a guidance to the designer."
Thus, Civil Engineering is the synthesis of freely-creative design and an analytical approach to the design,
distinct from the architecture profession, where aesthetics is the focal point.
